Greenland Sovereignty

Why America Keeps Coming Back for Greenland

Greenland is not seeing global interest for the first time. In 1867 when the US bought Alaska, policymakers discussed Greenland under Manifest Destiny; Truman proposed acquisition in 1946; the Thule base followed. America's strategic interest has always been about countering enemies.

Three reasons Uncle Sam wants control. First, military bases to secure against Russian and Chinese expansion in the Arctic. Second, critical minerals — Greenland is resource-rich and America needs diversification against China's export weaponization. Third, geography — controlling Greenland gives simultaneous access to the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic oceans.

Whether America's current push is genuine acquisition or leverage for NATO defense spending negotiations with the EU remains unclear. Brussels is furious either way.
