Sudan Civil War
2023 Apr 15The World's Largest Displacement Crisis
On April 15, 2023, fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for total control. By 2025, over 12 million people were displaced — the planet's largest displacement crisis. Famine gripped Darfur and Kordofan. RSF forces conducted ethnic cleansing in El Geneina.
International response was negligible. The war received a fraction of attention directed at Ukraine or Gaza. The UAE supplied significant RSF support through arms and logistics via Chad.
Sudan demonstrated that catastrophes command global attention only when intersecting with great-power interests. Without that intersection, millions are displaced and starved in near-silence. Does geopolitical relevance determine humanitarian priority?
