The US engages in Venezuela
2026 Jan 3Maduro Falls, Oil Interests Rise
The US launched Operation Absolute Resolve on January 3rd. Maduro was captured and transported to USS Iwo Jima. The primary justification was narco-terrorism — but placing the western hemisphere under America's control was the underlying purpose. Washington was uncomfortable with China engaging in South America, wanting to ensure oil and minerals would not flow to Beijing at lower prices.
Other countries had reservations about the bold intervention. The US did not fully occupy the country or establish a new government, yet Mr Trump acknowledged the White House was interested in Venezuela's oil. Whether American oil companies will be directly involved remains unclear.
Delcy Rodriguez, Maduro's deputy, is being backed by Mr Trump. Having released roughly 260 political prisoners, she promises economic reforms and boosted oil production.
